How to identify differences across versions of a Power BI Report | Scott Stauffer
As a Power BI report developer, do you ever find yourself singing the Sesame Street song, “One of these things is not like the others?” We’ve all been there… Someone reaches out to you for help indicating a report you developed a while ago, no longer provides the correct results. Upon investigation you learn many people have made modifications since you last touched the report. You have access to restore from numerous versions; you just aren’t sure how to quickly determine the best version to restore.
You may have seen a blog post or heard rumblings of the Tabular Model Definition Language (TMDL). Although TMDL enables us to find differences in the data model and DAX measures across versions, it doesn’t enable us to find differences in report pages, visuals, or Power Query across versions.
Enter git and pbi-tools. Git coupled with pbi-tools allows us to see what has changed in a Power BI Report, Power Query Code, in addition to what has changed in the data model and DAX measures.
In this session I’ll step you through how we can set up git, GitHub, and pbi-tools to allow you to track changes across versions of a Power BI Report file. I will also expose you to some git and GitHub concepts to git you on the road to success.
Join me next Tuesday (November 7th) and rid yourself of the ear worm once and for all!
